The big friendly apple

Back to the big apple. As soon as we arrive at JFK we start piling on all our clothes that have been at the bottom of our backpacks since we left Xela and instantly remember why when we arrive on the outdoor subway platform on our way to Manhattan. The air is chilly but fresh and still. Svenni ducks out of a bar on 4th Avenue to hand us keys so we can get into the spare bedroom he has once again been kind enough to lend us. When our backpacks are off our backs we head straight back out to grab some asian food.

Svenni's Street

After almost six months of new places, people and experiences New York almost feels eerily familiar. Especially since neither of us has spent more than a week at a time there. Several factors make it almost feel like home though. Factors that we have begun to appreciate. Always knowing where we are and how to get to and from everywhere. Speaking the language. Knowing if we are being ripped off. And if we're being too stingy.
Brooklyn

The amazing location of Svenni's place means that we spend our days browsing the city on foot, finding amazing bagels on 5th avenue (our breakfast for every day afterwards), grabbing some christmas presents, and soaking up the unique atmosphere of New York City: simultaneously hectic and easy going.

We also met up with some old friends, never tiring of telling travel tales and sharing good times. Lunch with Lloyd at a bistro owned by a charismatic scotsman and dinner and a show with Tim, Roberta and friends at a Puerto Rican restaurant come nightclub. Our tourist ventures put to one side as we edge closer to normality.

Farewell New York

Lloyd & Bjarki

Who would have thought you could blog on a bus? We're on our way to Washington, DC after some lovely New York days. We saw Lloyd for lunch yesterday, and then took a stroll with him from Union Square to Chelsea. Meeting Lloyd is always a pleasure, he has one of the best outlooks on life.

Hver hefði trúað því að maður gæti bloggað um borð í rútu? Við erum núna á leiðinni til Washington, DC eftir yndislega daga í New York. Við hittum Lloyd í hádegismat í gær, og röltum svo með honum frá Union Square yfir til Chelsea. Það er alltaf jafn ánægjulegt að hitta Lloyd, hann er með einstaklega góða sýn á lífið.

Chelsea Market

The High Line

In Chelsea we saw the High Line, a brilliant park built on a former railway platform that stretches up along the Hudson river above the New York streets. It is planned to extend all the way from around 10th street and up to around 35th street. We spent the rest of the day just ambling about around our temporary home until we went out with Svenni during the night. Note: never forget your ID when you go out in the US. We learnt our lesson the hard way, walking back to Svenni's and then taking a taxi to meet up with him again.

Í Chelsea kíktum við á the High Line, frábæran garð sem er byggður á fyrrum lestarteinum sem liggja meðfram Hudson ánni fyrir ofan götur New York. Það er áætlað að þessi garður nái á endanum frá sirka 10. stræti og alla leiðina upp að sirka 35. stræti. Afgangnum af deginum eyddum við í letilegt hangs í kringum tímabundið heimili okkar þar til við kíktum út með Svenna um kvöldið. Takið eftir: ekki gleyma skilríkjum heima þegar þið kíkið út á lífið í Bandaríkjunum. Við munum það líklega næst eftir að hafa rölt aftur heim til Svenna og tekið svo leigubíl til þess að hitta hann aftur.

Svenni's home/Heima hjá Svenna

Today we finished off our days in NYC with a lovely lunch with Tim, Roberta and Svenni at the Spotted Pig, after watching the Argentina-Nigeria game there with Svenni and some friends. Now on our way to DC, we are already looking forward to meeting our friends in New York again on our way home in December. We spent our days in New York "letting our feet be our entertainment" as Roberta said, strolling around the streets taking in the sights and the atmosphere. We can't imagine a better way to enjoy our favourite city.

Í dag lukum við dögum okkar í New York í hádegismat með Tim, Robertu og Svenna á Spotted Pig eftir að hafa horft á Argentínu-Nígeríu þar með Svenna og félögum hans. Þó við séum ennþá á leiðinni til DC, þá er okkur strax farið að hlakka til að hitta vini okkar í New York aftur á leiðinni heim í desember. Í New York "voru fæturnir okkar afþreying" eins og Roberta orðaði það, töltandi um göturnar að njóta þess sem fyrir augu bar. Við getum ekki hugsað okkur betri leið til þess að njóta uppáhalds borgarinnar okkar.

Union Square

Some people told us that they couldn't comment but that should now be fixed so we'd love to hear from you. Also, you can check out more pictures at www.flickr.com/arnita.

Einhverjir sögðust ekki geta commentað en nú ætti að vera búið að kippa því í liðinn þannig að endilega látið í ykkur heyra. Þið getið svo skoðað fleiri myndir á www.flickr.com/arnita.

Rain and Shine

Chinatown

Williamsburg bridge

New York wasn't quite ready for us though. I guess it must have felt dirty because it took a bit of a shower yesterday. Today, the dust is gone and who knows, it might just put on its sunday best, even on a thursday. The brownstones outside the living room window are looking a mix of bronze and gold in the morning sun, the dull grey and brown of yesterday are now only seen in the shadows.

New York var greinilega ekki alveg tilbúin fyrir okkur í gær því hún átti eftir að fara í sturtu.

Can you see the simularity with Empire State and the evolution of the condom?/
Sjáið þið eitthvað líkt með Empire State og þróun smokksins?

Grand Central Station

We wore out the soles of our shoes, browsing the city in a mix of sunshine and rain. Central Park was beautiful in the sun and SoHo in the rain. Times Square was unique as ever. Again, Jóna Guðný shared the day with us, along with her umbrella.

Today, a lunch with Lloyd at a cuban restaurant and then to decide whether we go to Washington later today or tomorrow. Either way, New York has been awesome so far.

Í dag ætlum við að fá okkur hádegismat með Lloyd á Kúbönskum veitingastað og svo er spurning hvort við förum til Washington seinna í dag eða hvort við bíðum þar til á morgun. New York er allavega búin að vera frábær hingað til.

And we're off!

Sitting in Svenni's apartment in NYC enjoying a morning of city sounds on a cloudy day. New York almost feels like it could be home, but after yesterdays trip any place with a friendly face and a comfy couch would feel like home. The single defining moment of the trip? Waking up in my seat on the plane, boiling hot, realizing I hadn't just dosed off for a second but slept for an hour, and we were still sitting at the terminal in Keflavík! A five and a half hour flight turned into 8 hours on the plane added to the hour in line to check in.

Íbúðin hjá Svenna í New York á skýjuðum morgni.

Thanks to Jóna Guðný for sharing the fun times with us. Arnas impatience does not tolerate these kinds of things and even I was starting to get anxious to finally get to our destination. We arrived at 11pm instead of 7. It's great to see Svenni and now we are ready to enjoy New York in Summer.
